Egypt’s interior ministry said it is offering school uniforms and stationery at discounted prices at dozens of outlets nationwide as off Tuesday in a bid to ease the burden on parents.
The move is part of a broader initiative sponsored by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and launched by the ministry in mid-2018 to provide basic food commodities at 20-30 percent lower prices in cooperation with a number of major supermarket chains. The government says the scheme is intended to combat high prices and alleviate the burden on millions of Egyptians.
In this phase, the ninth in the ‘We are All One’ initiative, the ministry will sell school uniforms and stationery at 30 percent lower prices at around 300 outlets around the country, including about 40 in Cairo, the ministry said in a statement late on Monday.
Outlets where the products will be available include outlets set up by the ministry, branches of a number of supermarket chains and moving cars.
The statement lists the details of locations and addresses of all the outlets.
Egypt’s 2019/2020 school year is scheduled to start on 21 September for most school grades, the country’s education minister said earlier this week.
Kindergarten and grades one and two are scheduled to start on 11 September.
Soaring prices following the 2016 floatation of Egypt’s currency have strained the budgets of many Egyptians. The move was part of a broad economic reform programme that also included steep subsidy cuts, fuel price hikes and the introduction of a value-added tax.
